What makes pool paving different

Pool surrounds need three things regular paving doesn't:

  1. Slip resistance. Wet pavers are slippery. The right paver for a pool surround has a textured or shot-blasted surface that grips underfoot, even when wet.
  2. Salt and chlorine resistance. Pool water (and salt chlorinators especially) attacks the calcium in concrete pavers over time. The right pool paver is either sealed concrete, clay brick, or a dense cobble.
  3. UV and heat resistance. Pretoria summer sun is brutal. A dark paver around a pool can be too hot to walk on barefoot. Lighter colours (terracotta, sandstone, light grey) stay walkable.

Common pool paving materials in Pretoria

  • Salt-resistant clay brick (Corobrik) — the most popular for older Pretoria homes. Holds colour, naturally slip-resistant, ages well.
  • Shot-blasted concrete pavers — SmartStone and Infraset both make pool-rated versions with a textured surface.
  • Cobble or flagstone — premium look, premium price. Best for new-build or full renovations.
  • Travertine or natural stone (imported) — beautiful but expensive and needs sealing every 1-2 years. Higher maintenance.

Pool paving process

  1. Site visit to measure the pool surround, check fall for drainage, and discuss paver options
  2. Excavation to the right depth (pavers + bedding + sub-base + existing pool coping height)
  3. Sub-base prep with proper falls away from the pool (typically 1:60 minimum)
  4. Drainage point (strip drain, ACO drain, or weep holes) to handle splash-out
  5. Laying pavers with tight joints (no weeds, no ant ingress)
  6. Sealing (recommended, especially for concrete pavers)

Timeline

2-4 days for a typical residential pool surround (15-40m²), plus 48 hours before you can walk on it. Larger surrounds or complex shapes take longer. The pool can usually stay full during the work, but the contractor will tell you at the site visit.
