Driveway paving in Pretoria
The most requested paving project in the Pretoria metro. We arrange new driveways and full re-paves — brick, concrete, cobble, or flagstone — for residential homes and small commercial properties. Submit your project for a free site visit and quote.
What's involved
A typical Pretoria residential driveway is 50-100m² and follows a similar process regardless of material:
- Site visit and measure — the contractor walks the property, checks the existing surface, measures the area, and notes access, drainage, and any obstacles.
- Excavation (if needed) — old paving, grass, or debris is removed. Depths vary depending on the existing base.
- Sub-base — 75-100mm of compacted crusher run for residential driveways, 150-200mm for heavier vehicles.
- Bedding sand — 25-30mm of coarse plaster sand, screeded level.
- Laying the pavers — laid to the agreed pattern, with edge restraints around the perimeter.
- Compaction and grouting — plate-compacted, then kiln-dried sand is swept into the joints.
- Sealing (recommended) — applied 6+ months after install. We can arrange this as a follow-on service.
What affects the price of a driveway
Every Pretoria driveway is quoted on site because the variables are too many for a public price list. The biggest cost drivers:
- Material. Tar is cheapest, concrete pavers are the most popular, clay brick is premium, cobble and flagstone are the most expensive.
- Sub-base condition. If the existing base has failed (clay movement, washout, tree roots), the prep work is more expensive.
- Suburb. Pretoria East and Centurion (especially Irene, Waterkloof, Silver Lakes) run higher because of estate requirements and the contractor's travel. Pretoria North and West run lower.
- Access. Narrow streets in older suburbs (Wonderboom, Villieria, Sunnyside) require smaller equipment and add labour time.
- Area shape. A rectangular 80m² driveway is faster to lay than an L-shaped or curved one with cuts.
- Edge work. Kerbing, drainage changes, retaining walls, and steps are usually separate line items.
How long does a driveway take?
1-3 days for a typical 50-100m² residential driveway, plus 24-48 hours before you can drive on it. The contractor should give you a specific timeline at the site visit based on your project. Weather (especially summer thunderstorms) can extend this by a day or two.
Estate and HOA approval
If you're in a security estate or complex, the body corporate or HOA often has approved paver brands, colours, and patterns. The contractor should know this before quoting — most of our Pretoria East contractors already know the Silver Lakes, Woodhill, and Eldoraigne specifications.
